We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tesco Medical Mavericks for supporting the delivery and helping us to inspire our 280 Year 7 students.

The project aimed to motivate and encourage young people to consider future careers in medicine and science. A particular focus was placed on raising girls’ interest in STEM subjects, and it was clear that students strongly engaged with the practical Medical Mavericks experience.

The hands-on workshops played a key role in increasing interest in STEM. By taking part in practical activities, students gained a real insight into how medical science works in practice. This approach sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, helping students understand how science can directly impact their lives and future opportunities.

Medical Mavericks is unique in offering students exposure to the full spectrum of roles within the NHS, covering both professional and non-professional pathways. During the sessions, students explored topics such as surgery and took part in practical experiences including keyhole surgery simulations. They also had the opportunity to take blood from a robotic arm, perform ultrasounds to measure heart rates, examine veins, and use modern technology to learn about eye  health. These immersive activities significantly broadened students’ knowledge and inspired many to think differently about science and healthcare careers.

Students were provided with work booklets that guided their learning and introduced alternative pathways into the medical field. The workshops encouraged positive behaviour, enhanced wellbeing, and created an engaging and supportive learning environment.

Overall, the project helped students build confidence, ask thoughtful questions, and deepen their understanding. It also supported a culture of continuous, trans-generational learning, encouraging students to see education and career aspirations as an ongoing journey.
